A team of students from Manado Independent School (MIS) made a remarkable showing at the 2024 Biology Science and Arts Festival (BIOSAFE), held at the State University Training Center in Manado (UNIMA). The festival, which took place on October 24-25, 2024, brought together high school students from across Sulawesi for two days of intense competition and creative showcases. Representing MIS were Ashley Raranta (Grade 11), Silvia Moningka (Grade 11), and Kayla Kandou (Grade 10).
The highlight of BIOSAFE 2024 was the fiercely competitive Biology Olympiad, where MIS proudly secured 3rd place. Participants were challenged to demonstrate their knowledge and analytical skills through a series of rigorous tests. The competition unfolded in three rounds: preliminary, practical, and final, each designed to assess the students’ comprehension and ability to apply their biology expertise under pressure. MIS students showcased not only their academic proficiency but also their perseverance in facing the demanding challenges presented in each round.
In addition to the Olympiad, BIOSAFE hosted a poster design competition themed “Natural Environment,” encouraging students to channel their creativity and imagination. Kayla Kandou, competing in this category, also claimed 3rd place with her stunning digital artwork. Her talent, cultivated from a young age, was on full display as she used her digital drawing skills to bring the environmental theme to life.
Reflecting on her experience, Kayla shared, “Our team spent about a week preparing for the Olympiad. We dedicated full days to studying and discussing strategies for the competition. It feels surreal, and I’m incredibly grateful for what we’ve achieved.” She also emphasized her appreciation for her teachers, parents, and faith, adding, “This experience motivated me to push myself further. I’m especially thankful to my teachers, parents, and the Lord for guiding us through the preparation and the competition.”
The event served not only as a platform for competition but also as an opportunity for participants to broaden their knowledge and enhance their creativity. MIS students’ efforts were recognized not only for their academic achievements but also for their commitment to raising awareness about environmental protection. The school commended the team for using their talents in both the visual arts and biology to promote a message of environmental sustainability. BIOSAFE 2024 was not just about competing—it was about education, creativity, and fostering a sense of social responsibility in the younger generation, encouraging them to take an active role in protecting the planet for the future.
