Two talented Grade 10 students from Manado Independent School (MIS), Kayla Vianney Kandou and Mayrin Lin, have once again brought pride to their school through their outstanding achievements in fine arts, particularly painting. From a total of 1,026 submissions from across Indonesia, only 142 works were selected for exhibition at the Indonesian National Gallery in Jakarta this July, under the theme “Growing Without Fear.”
Kayla’s piece, titled “Snakes, Ladders, and Hope,” and Mayrin’s work, “Champion in My Own Version,” are not only impressive in technical execution but also rich in emotional depth and meaning. Their artworks explore themes of courage, growth, and resilience in a world of constant change, delivering messages that resonate far beyond the canvas.
“These paintings are more than just visual expressions—they carry powerful reflections of personal journeys and aspirations,” said Ajeng Prasasti, M.Sn.., MIS’s dedicated and experienced art teacher. “Behind every brushstroke lies a story, a struggle, and a soul poured into the work. Kayla and Mayrin have shown remarkable maturity and courage in expressing themselves. Their commitment to exploration and creativity has resulted in pieces that are both visually compelling and emotionally profound.”
Their selection for the National Gallery exhibition is not merely a personal triumph—it represents the voice of a new generation unafraid to create and communicate. MIS is proud to provide a nurturing environment that encourages students to explore diverse forms of self-expression, including the arts. For many, art becomes a bridge to express what words often cannot.
Kayla and Mayrin’s success is a testament to the power of creativity, perseverance, and the importance of schools in supporting young artists as they grow, reflect, and inspire others.
