In honor of Earth Day, Manado Independent School (MIS) held its annual Science Week on April 22, 2025, under the theme “Inspiring Curiosity, Building Solutions.” This year’s program centered around recycling, encouraging students to take meaningful action to protect the planet. The event opened with a brief but heartfelt service, setting a thoughtful tone for the week.
Through prayer, praise, and short reflections, the school community was invited to consider humanity’s role as stewards of the Earth, responsible for caring for the natural world entrusted to them by God. The activities throughout Science Week emphasized practical applications of science to real-world environmental challenges, particularly transforming waste materials into useful and innovative creations.
Among the most captivating events was BioCosplay, a costume showcase featuring outfits made entirely from recycled materials. Seventeen student pairs took the stage wearing imaginative costumes crafted from plastic, paper, fabric scraps, and other repurposed items. The students were deeply involved in every stage—from brainstorming and collecting materials to designing and constructing the final pieces.
Two standout costumes that drew particular admiration were the jellyfish costume—gracefully designed with transparent plastic and waste yarn to mimic the fluid beauty of ocean life—and the sunflower costume, a bright and cheerful ensemble with oversized petals made from vividly colored recycled paper, topped with a stunning crown that wowed the judges.
The packed MIS hall erupted in applause at the end of the parade. Teachers, students, and parents alike expressed admiration for the creativity, dedication, and teamwork displayed by all participants.
Science Week 2025 concluded with an award ceremony honoring students for their outstanding contributions. Categories included Most Innovative Project, Best Presentation, Most Creative Recycled Costume, and Most Active Participation, highlighting both the educational and inspirational impact of the week’s events.
