Five students from Manado Independent School (MIS) showcased their exceptional mathematical and scientific abilities on the international stage, earning accolades in two prestigious Asia-level competitions: the China-Hong Kong Mathematics Competition (Hua Xia Cup) – Qualifier Round and the Japan International Science and Mathematics Olympiad (JISMO).
At the Hua Xia Cup, held on March 22, 2025, three MIS students achieved remarkable results:
- Alqisha Ibrahim (Grade 7) – Bronze Medal
- Merrilynn Tandouw (Grade 8) – Silver Medal
- Lionel Matthew Colin Tamunu (Grade 6) – Bronze Medal
Recognized as one of the most rigorous mathematics competitions in Asia, the Hua Xia Cup tests participants’ analytical and problem-solving abilities under high-pressure conditions.
“When I learned that I earned a silver medal in the Hua Xia Cup, I felt as though all my hard work practicing problems and studying had paid off,” said Merrilynn Tandouw, a Grade 8 student at MIS. “I couldn’t have done it without the support of my mathematics teachers, who guided and encouraged me. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to explore new topics and grow, all while having the unwavering support of my teachers and school.”
Just a week later, on March 29, 2025, two more MIS students shone at the Japan International Science and Mathematics Olympiad (JISMO):
- Maria Michellin Moniaga (Grade 6) – Emerald Award (Mathematics category)
- Samuel Kontato Kho (Grade 6) – Sapphire Award (Science category)
These achievements highlight MIS’s strong commitment to nurturing talent in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). The school offers outstanding facilities and expert educators who not only teach but also mentor students, encouraging continuous intellectual growth. MIS proudly proves that students from North Sulawesi can excel on the global stage and compete with the best young minds in Asia.
