Showing Compassion Through Medical Mission Service

High school students from Manado Independent School (MIS) brought their learning to life by participating in a Medical Mission program held at Eden Advent Church, Airmadidi, North Sulawesi, on March 20, 2025. These students, who are enrolled in the Human Anatomy course—part of the school’s medical class curriculum—were able to extend their classroom knowledge into real-world community service.

As part of their studies, MIS medical students learn about human anatomy, physiology, and the fundamentals of health science. The Medical Mission program offers them a unique opportunity to apply these concepts in the field under the supervision of experienced teachers and professional healthcare workers.

Prior to the event, students underwent training sessions where they learned essential skills, including how to measure blood pressure and blood sugar levels, conduct basic health checks, record patient health histories, and provide health and hygiene education. These preparations aimed to ensure the students could contribute meaningfully and confidently during the mission.

During the outreach activity, students engaged directly with patients, assisted in medical checkups, and gained valuable insight into the health challenges faced by members of the church and the surrounding community. Residents expressed appreciation for the program, noting its positive impact on community awareness and well-being.

Dwayne Mandias, a Grade 11 student at MIS and one of the program participants, reflected on the experience:
“I was very happy to be part of the medical mission at the church. It was organized by our Human Anatomy class, and it was a great way for us to help the community. We helped check blood pressure, uric acid, blood glucose, and cholesterol for the church members. We’re grateful for the warm welcome we received, and it was heartwarming to see how happy everyone was with the health services.”

Hands-on experiences like this equip students not only with practical medical skills but also with a deeper sense of empathy and social responsibility—essential qualities for those aspiring to serve in the healthcare field.
