Manado Independent School (MIS) continues to showcase its dedication to community service through the MIS Cares initiative, specifically with the Blood Donation Program. The MIS Science Club, in partnership with the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), spearheaded the blood donation event on Monday, March 10, 2025, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the MIS clinic. The initiative aimed to make a tangible impact on public health while promoting the spirit of giving.
Recognizing the significance of supporting others, MIS Cares, with backing from the PMI, aimed to raise awareness among students, teachers, and staff about the importance of donating blood. PMI’s involvement lent credibility and confidence to the event, ensuring potential donors felt secure. The PMI professionals present ensured that the donation process was conducted using sterile equipment and in a safe, orderly environment.
Before the donation, a brief health screening was performed to assess each donor’s eligibility. Under the guidance of PMI, Science Club members also gained valuable hands-on experience, assisting with tasks such as checking blood pressure, determining blood type, and counseling prospective donors. Equipped with knowledge about the scientific and medical benefits of blood donation, Science Club members played an active role in event coordination—overseeing registration, documenting the event, managing queues, and offering refreshments to donors after the process.
To encourage broader participation, the Science Club conducted a social media campaign and distributed posters and invitations throughout the school. This outreach helped drive a strong turnout, with the majority of donors being MIS students, along with teachers and staff.
“Joining the Red Cross blood donation program was an incredible experience for me, especially since I had just turned 17 and was eligible to donate. The event was well organized, and the staff ensured that every donor felt comfortable and informed throughout the process. It was amazing and rewarding to give back to the community by donating blood, and I look forward to donating again in the future,” shared Jehyeng Raule, a Grade 12 student, who proudly donated blood on his birthday.
This event highlights the unique educational approach at MIS, where students are taught not only to care for others emotionally and spiritually but also to make tangible contributions to their community. The experience reinforces the school’s emphasis on social responsibility, ensuring that when students graduate, they are equipped with the values and skills to care for both their health and the lives of others.
The Science Club continues to organize events that merge academic learning with real-world application. Chriscelsia Limantara, another Grade 12 student, shared her experience: “This was my first time donating, and while it seemed scary at first, I quickly realized there was nothing to fear. The process was smooth, the staff was supportive, and knowing that I was helping someone in need made it all worth it. If you’re worried about the pain, trust me—it doesn’t hurt, and the courage it gives you is priceless.” Through this blood donation initiative, MIS hopes to collect a substantial amount of blood to aid patients in need. The school firmly believes in the noble cause of saving lives, as each drop of blood donated has the potential to make a life-saving difference.
