English at MIS Breaks into the Digital Era

Manado Independent School (MIS) is once again holding its much-anticipated annual event, English Week. This year, the celebration is scheduled from March 3 to 7, 2025, at the MIS Auditorium, centered around the theme, “English in the Digital Age.” The theme highlights the significant impact of technology on how we learn and communicate in English, showcasing how digital advancements can enhance language skills.

The week kicked off with a worship service, setting the tone for an exciting series of activities. Students from all levels—elementary, junior high, and high school—were eager to dive into the event’s immersive experiences, which combined creativity with technology. The variety of activities catered to different interests, fostering enthusiasm and engagement across the school.

For elementary school students, the lineup of events included:

  • News Casting: Students took on the role of news anchors, practicing public speaking.

At the junior high school level, students participated in a diverse set of activities, including:

  • On-the-spot Poem Writing Contest: A spontaneous competition testing students’ creative writing abilities.

  • Literature Class Presentation: A deep dive into English literary works through presentations.

For high school students, the events became even more challenging, with competitions and performances such as:

  • Spelling Bee: Testing accuracy and speed in spelling words.
  • Extemporaneous Speech: A speech competition that required critical thinking and impromptu speaking.
  • Speech Choir: A group performance blending speech and teamwork.
  • Musical Performances: Integrating music and acting to showcase students’ talents.

  • Music Video Making: A creative challenge that combined video production and language skills.

One of the participants, Ashley Tooy, an 11th grader at MIS, shared her experience: “The high school performances during English Week displayed a fabulous fusion of acting and innovation. It was amusing to see my favorite movie characters come to life. While there were areas for improvement, overall, the presentations were a huge success.”

Another 11th grader, Richelle Lisungan, expressed her admiration for her peers: “What I admired the most was the speech choir. They were well-prepared, and their voices and movements were amazing. The character portrayal was also spot-on, funny, and entertaining.”

Performance after performance was met with enthusiastic applause from the audience, a testament to the students’ dedication and hard work. MIS believes that events like English Week not only engage students, but also transform how they approach learning English—making it more interactive, exciting, and relevant to the digital age.
