The Manado Independent School (MIS) Science Club successfully hosted a DNA Extraction Seminar at the MIS Auditorium on November 28, 2024. This event showcased the club’s dedication to advancing science education, bringing together high school students and teachers for an engaging and informative session. The seminar featured Mr. Beivy Kolondam, S.Si., M.Si., a lecturer from Sam Ratulangi University, as the keynote speaker.
Under the theme “DNA Extraction,” Mr. Kolondam offered a comprehensive explanation of DNA’s structure and function, emphasizing its significance in molecular biology, health, and various scientific applications. Students were invited to explore the wonders of DNA, the molecule that serves as the biological blueprint for all living organisms. Throughout the seminar, interactive activities allowed students to gain new insights into the practical applications of genetics and the tools and techniques used in genetic laboratories. The question-and-answer session stood out as a particularly engaging part of the event, encouraging students to expand their understanding of biology.
One of the participants, Lesandra Jherniel Mantiri, a grade 11 student, shared her reflections on the seminar: “The seminar was incredibly eye-opening. I learned new things about DNA that deepened my interest in science. The hands-on experience of extracting DNA from a banana was fascinating. Although some terms were more complex than what we’ve covered in class, it has motivated me to explore more.” Lesandra also expressed her gratitude on behalf of all participants, saying, “It was an informative seminar that will continue to inspire us.” The event highlights the MIS Science Club’s ongoing commitment to sharing knowledge by inviting experts in the field to inspire the next generation of scientists.
