The 2024 American Math Olympiad (AMO), a prestigious international event, was once again graced by the presence of talented students from Manado Independent School (MIS). Ranging from elementary to high school levels, these students embarked on a journey that demanded dedication, discipline, and perseverance from all involved—students, teachers, and parents alike. Since the start of the school year, MIS students have undergone rigorous training to master not only fundamental mathematical skills but also advanced problem-solving strategies, logic, and analytical thinking. This dedication culminated in impressive achievements as MIS students brought home multiple medals from this year’s AMO competition, including:
- Nick Louis Ciakaren (Grade 2) – Silver Medal
- Dylan Lincoln Siamando (Grade 2) – Bronze Medal

- Samuel Kontanto Kho (Grade 6) – Bronze Medal
- Maria Michellin Silvia Moniaga (Grade 6) – Bronze Medal
- Tristan Benedict Kandou (Grade 12) – Bronze Medal
Samuel Kontanto Kho, a sixth-grade student and bronze medalist, shared his thoughts on the competition: “My parents always encourage me to participate in competitions, which fuels my passion for math. I enjoy math because it challenges my problem-solving skills, analytical thinking, and logic. I love working with numbers and know that this subject will be useful in the future.” He further praised the school’s support, adding, “The teachers at MIS are incredible. They make math understandable, and many of the topics we learn in school often appear in competitions.”
These accomplishments reflect not only the pride of MIS but also the effectiveness of systematic training and a passion for learning. Beyond academic success, students gained valuable lessons in hard work, perseverance, and time management.
Fanda Alsafan, mother of Tristan Kandou, a Grade 12 bronze medalist, expressed her joy at witnessing her son’s growth: “When we moved to MIS, the school played a pivotal role in shaping Tristan. I hope that as he and his friends make decisions about their future studies, they can pursue fields they are passionate about, especially in mathematics. I believe that following one’s passion will lead to future success.” She also praised the school’s innovative teaching methods, stating, “MIS fosters a love for learning through interactive and engaging classroom activities, which spark curiosity and make subjects like mathematics enjoyable.” Studying at Manado Independent School not only helps students unlock their academic potential but also nurtures their confidence and competence, enabling them to compete on a global stage. With unwavering dedication and enthusiasm, these students are ready to go even further, inspire others, and make meaningful contributions to the future.
