Manado Independent School’s Annual Field Trip: Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Practice

Manado Independent School (MIS) recently concluded its annual field trip, a unique blend of educational exploration and experiential learning. This year’s event encompassed both national and local destinations, engaging students from kindergarten to high school alongside their dedicated teachers.

The field trip serves as a cornerstone of MIS’s educational philosophy, aiming to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Through observation and hands-on activities, students delve deeper into a variety of subjects like science, social studies, history, traditional arts, and culture. This immersive approach not only enriches their understanding but also fosters essential life skills like self-discipline and social interaction.

National Exploration in Jakarta

Students from grades 4 to 12 embarked on a national field trip to Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital city. This enriching journey exposed them to a multitude of historical, educational, and industrial sites. They explored the Fatahillah Museum and Wayang Museum, gaining insights into Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage. Visits to Global Jaya School and Tarumanagara University provided glimpses into the country’s dynamic educational landscape. Additionally, students were inspired by the National Monument (Monas), a symbol of Indonesian independence.  Experiential learning opportunities included exploring the science marvels at the Indonesia Science Center and the Electricity & Renewable Energy Museum. They even witnessed firsthand the workings of modern industry at PT. YoyiC Dairy Indonesia and Lubang Buaya Museum, a poignant reminder of Indonesia’s history.

Local Discoveries in North Sulawesi

For students participating in the local field trip, activities were meticulously tailored to their age and academic level. Younger students from kindergarten and grade 1 enjoyed a stimulating visit to Gramedia Bookstore, fostering their love for reading and exploration. Grades 2 and 3 expanded their understanding of retail and commerce through trips to Hypermart and Gramedia Bookstore.

For middle schoolers, the focus shifted towards industry and governance. Grade 4 students gained valuable insights into food production at PT. Indofood. Students in grades 5 and 6 embarked on a cultural immersion, exploring the art of clay craft in Pulutan Village.  Seventh and eighth graders delved into the world of business at PT. SMS and PT. Indofood, while those in grade 8 gained valuable knowledge about customs regulations at BASARNAS.  The ninth grade took a step into the world of local government, visiting the North Sulawesi Regional House of Representatives Office (DPRD).

High school students were challenged with thought-provoking experiences. Grade 10 students gained exposure to prominent Indonesian corporations like PT. Sinar Purefood, PT. Samudra Mandiri Sentosa, Bank Indonesia, and the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX), igniting their understanding of the nation’s economic landscape.  Grade 11 students further honed their appreciation for local arts by delving deeper into the art of clay craft making in Pulutan Village.

Enriching Experiences, Lasting Impact

“The visits to various places were incredible!  Learning about history at Lubang Buaya Museum and witnessing yogurt production at PT. YoyiC Dairy Indonesia were experiences I’ll never forget,” shared Ali, a 10th-grade student, reflecting on the national field trip.

Through this annual event, MIS underscores its unwavering commitment to holistic education. By combining academic knowledge with practical experiences, the school empowers students to become well-rounded individuals with a deep appreciation for Indonesia’s diverse culture and thriving industry.
