Positive and interesting activities have always been provided by Manado Independent School (MIS) from the beginning of its operation until now.
One of the programs designed is the Preparatory English Course (PEC). This school year 2023 – 2024, MIS held it from June 19 – 30, 2023. This is specifically offered for new students but is open to returning students who have registered for the new school year.
PEC is conducted every year and is free of charge. This year’s Coordinator, Vijay Kollabathula, Ph.D. mentioned this program’s main benefits: to adapt to the English-speaking environment or community and learn some basic English knowledge and skills. “By learning to do so, new students will be used to speaking English in their daily conversation and interaction with peers and teachers, and be adjusted to the culture of the school which uses English as the main medium of instruction,” Dr. Vijay conveyed.
This year’s PEC program is divided into 4 levels: ECP, grades I – V, grades VII-VIII, and grades X – XI. The course covers four language areas: grammar, writing, reading, and speaking & listening. This program is designed for ten (10) days only including a field trip day, an examination day, and a recognition program.
PEC can be stressful and intimidating to some new students, hence, it is integrated with an exciting learning activity outside the campus—a field trip. This specific activity aids students learn hands-on and direct experiences. However, during this activity, students are expected to apply the basic communication skills they acquired during their learning sessions.
This year, kindergarten students visited the Fire Station in North Minahasa, while elementary students to The National Search and Rescue Agency in North Minahasa. Middle School students were assigned to Tasikoki Wildlife Rescue Center Kema and the High School students to the Weather Station.
One of the highlights of the program happened on Friday, June 30, 2023. On this day, students showcased their talents and be awarded a certificate of completion with their grades in it. However, students who did not comply with the number of days required will not qualify to receive an award.
May this program be able to give awesome and memorable learning experiences to all students who have participated this year. May God’s blessings be continually poured on Manado Independent School and its administration as they continue to provide quality education to all students.
